A new survey by the Hobby School of Public Affairs and Texas Southern University finds Texans nearly evenly divided with 51% approving and 49% disapproving the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies. The results reveal deep political, racial, gender, and generational splits, with white voters, men, and older generations showing stronger support, while Black, Hispanic, and younger Texans expressing more opposition. The partisan divide reveals 90% of Republicans backing President Trump’s approach versus just 13% of Democrats.
Support also varies by policy. A majority, around 54%, approve of local cooperation with federal immigration agents, and 58% support ending in-state tuition for undocumented students, a more overwhelmingly backed by Republicans. However, only 42% approve of suspending asylum applications.
Texans remain divided over immigration’s broader effects, with fewer than half believing President Trump’s policies will reduce crime or strengthen the state’s economy, while 47% think the policies will weaken it. A recent Dallas Fed report supports this concern, warning that stricter immigration enforcement may slow down job growth as immigrant labor declines.
