Trump Revokes Venezuelan TPS Extension

1

On January 28, 2025, Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) announced that the Trump administration would revoke the extension of Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) for Venezuelan nationals living in the United States. This decision reverses the 18-month TPS extension granted by former President Joe Biden just before the end of his term.

TPS assists individuals in the U.S. who cannot safely return to their home country due to natural disasters or armed conflict. According to DHS figures, approximately 600,000 Venezuelans currently benefit from TPS protections. The Trump administration’s decision ensures that Venezuelans who applied for TPS under the 2021 designation will retain their work permits and protection from deportation until September 2025. Meanwhile, those who applied under the 2023 designation will continue to have TPS at least until early April 2025.
