Supreme Court Lifts Limits on LA Immigration Raids

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing immigration raids in Los Angeles to continue while a legal challenge proceeds. In a 6-3 decision, the majority lifted a federal judge’s restraining order that had barred Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents from stopping individuals without “reasonable suspicion.” The ruling permits agents to consider factors like race, language, or job status when making stops—though not as sole justifications. Justice Brett Kavanaugh defended the decision, arguing that while ethnicity alone is not enough, it can be a relevant factor with other indicators. The dissenting Justices vehemently opposed, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor warning that the ruling subjects’ people to racial profiling and unconstitutional treatment.

The legal challenge originated from an order by Judge Maame E. Frimpong, who cited substantial evidence that the raids violated the Fourth Amendment’ s protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. Judge Frimpong’s order prohibited agents from targeting people based solely on race, language, or type of work, especially in locations like bus stops and work sites. Immigration advocacy groups claim that federal agents were conducting indiscriminate roving patrols and detaining people without legal representation.

The decision sparked widespread backlash from California officials and immigrant advocates. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called it “un-American,” and Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the decision as enabling a “private police force.” Trump’s mass deportation push began with aggressive workplace raids in LA, promoting protests and controversial deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and Marines—later ruled illegal by a federal judge. Critics argue the raids have national implications with advocates warning that the court has effectively sanctioned racial profiling. Meanwhile, Trump continues expanding federal law enforcement activities in other cities.
