Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux revealed during a Community Police Oversight Board meeting that he declined a $25 million federal offer to join ICE's 287(g) program, which would have authorized some of his officers to enforce federal immigration laws. Comeaux stated he was contacted within the prior two weeks and responded with "absolutely not, no" to the proposal. The department's decision was made in part to focus on shortening 911 response times and fighting violent crime, with a spokesperson emphasizing that federal authorities have a different mission with the same importance.
During the meeting, Comeaux pushed back against social media claims suggesting Dallas police were extensively collaborating with federal immigration authorities, stating that the department has had very little interaction with ICE and that officers have not been asked to assist with immigration arrests in the streets. According to department policies, officers cannot stop or contact anyone solely to determine immigration status, though they are permitted but not required to ask about immigration status when someone has been lawfully detained or arrested. Comeaux expressed concern that continued public attention on the issue might draw unwanted federal focus to Dallas and create problems that do not currently exist.
